News has just surfaced that former Wham! singer George Michael has peacefully passed away in his home over this Christmas weekend.
His publicist has confirmed this, stating that “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.” No wonder. They lost their beloved son, brother and friend, during Christmas no less.
Police have said they are treating the death as unexplained, but that there aren’t any suspicious circumstances.
Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, Michael first found success with fellow Wham! singer Andrew Ridgely during the 1980’s. Blessed with good looks and a great singing voice, he quickly became a teen idol. Wham! hits include “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Careless Whisper.”
He later launched a successful solo career, his debut album Faith selling more than 10 million copies.
Combined with his solo career, the British pop star has sold over 80 million records worldwide.
In 1998 Michael announced that he was gay. In an exclusive interview with CNN‘s Jim Moret he stated:
