In honour of what would have been Heath Ledger’s 38th birthday, the trailer for the documentary on him was released yesterday.

Titled I Am Heath Ledger, the 2-minute clip features footage of Heath at home and on the road, as well as interviews with friends, family, and former colleagues.

Director Ang Lee, who worked with Ledger on the Oscar winning movie Brokeback Mountain, said “even as a supporting actor he will steal the whole show; that is the power of Heath Ledger.”

It’s no wonder he stole the show with that infectious smile of his. Remember 10 Things I Hate About You? I LOVE that movie.

The trailer reveals that Ledger wanted to move on from acting and into directing: “He was always a director. Acting was just a way to get there,” said childhood friend Trevor Dicalo. Model Christina Cauchi added that “there were always cameras around. A video camera, or a polaroid camera or a film camera. That’s the only way I think of him, with the camera in his hand.”

The question remains as to whether we will see Ledger’s former girlfriend Michelle Williams and their daughter, Matilda Rose, in the documentary. I can’t imagine them not making an appearance.

Ledger died on January 22nd, 2008 from cardiac arrest brought on by prescription drug intoxication.

Watch the trailer below. You will definitely feel a wrench in your heart. The documentary premieres on May 17th on Spike.
