Lost in the remote Siberian forest with her pup Kyrachaan for 11 days, this little miracle girl goes by the name of Karina Chikitova. She had accompanied her father on a trip to find work and, while following him home, lost her way. When her father returned home without Karina, the village went into a wide-spread panic. More than 100 people banded together in an effort to find her.
The villagers feared the worst when Kyrachaan returned home alone 9 days later. A report made to the Siberian Times by NTV News states:
‘That was the moment when our hearts sank, because we thought at least with her dog Karina had chances to survive – night in Yakutia are cold and some areas have already gone into minus temperatures.’
‘If she was to hug her puppy, we thought, this would have given her a chance to stay warm during nights and survive.’
‘So when her dog came back we thought ‘that’s it’ – even if she was alive – and chances were slim – now she would have definitely have lost all hopes. Our hearts truly and deeply sank.’
However, they quickly realized the pup was trying to show them something. Kyrachaan led them straight to Karina, where they found her huddled up in a bed of tall grass 4 miles from her village. Surprisingly she had no major injuries, only bug bites and a few scratches.
“She doesn’t want to speak about the time she spent in taiga, or not yet. The only thing she said [was] that she was eating berries and drank water from rivers.”
In the end, it was her puppy, Kyrachaan, who saved her life. The villagers even dubbed her “Mowgli” after the young boy from The Jungle Book who was able to survive while lost in the wilderness.
Later, a statue named ‘Girl with Dog’ was unveiled at the Yakutsk Airport to pay homage to the young girl and the dog that saved her.
