Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been a favourite amongst the ladies the past few weeks for his physical attributes, but today he’s receiving praise for a much more significant reason.

To mark International Women’s Day, Trudeau promised to invest $650 million to women’s reproductive rights around the world over the course of 3 years, which is double the current funding.

These funds will support family planning, contraceptives, the right for women to get safe and legal abortions, and sex education, strengthen reproductive health services, and also go towards programs that prevent and respond to gender-based violence, such as forced marriage and female genital mutilation.

This funding is extremely important because there are so many young girls and women around the world that are subjected to sexual violence, denied education, denied ownership over their own bodies, and held back by poverty.

Trudeau says that this means that many countries miss out on the economic contributions made by women.

This is in stark contrast the recent executive order put forth by U.S. President Donald Trump to block funding to organizations that support abortion services.

Yay for Canada to set an example and take on a leadership role in promoting the reproductive rights of women and fighting against unsafe, life-threatening abortions.

Trudeau also shared a video on Twitter of him addressing the public in honour of International Women’s Day. The self-proclaimed feminist celebrates the contributions made by women, but also reminds us that, although we have come a long way, there is still much work to be in the fight against patriarchy.

And incase you didn’t think you could swoon any more, he also recorded that same message in French:

To all the hard-working women out there, I commend you. And to all the wonderful men who honour the women in their lives and support equality, I extend my gratitude.

Happy International Women’s Day!
