A 26-year-old woman has been arrested for child neglect in South Africa after her 3-month-old daughter was eaten alive by giant rats while she was out partying all night, according to The Sun.
A neighbour told The Sun, “The baby could only of died a painful death.”
“The infants tongue, eyes and fingers had all been eaten. Besides the missing body parts, the remains had bites and wounds all over that were inflicted by the sharp teeth of the rats.”
Witnesses say she returned home around 6:30a.m. with her new boyfriend and the infants twin brother, aptly named Lucky, who she had taken out with her to the bar. The mother had originally tried to claim the baby burned to death.
Mama Sesi Mtshali, the landlady of the home said, “She leaves the children alone all night long and they cry themselves to sleep. She would not say she left them alone.”
Police later confirmed the baby did indeed die by being eaten by rats.
These rats can grow to be the size of small dogs. It’s not the first time this has happened either. In 2011, two young girls died from rat attacks as well, one of which was 3-year-old Lunathi Dwadwa, pictured below, who was killed in a small shack outside of Cape Town, as she lay asleep on the floor beside her parents.
A 77-year old grandmother, Nomathemba Joyi, died when rats chewed her face off as she slept.
This is an ongoing problem in South Africa, and it’s definitely quite horrifying.
