It has just come to light that former pro wrestler Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka has passed away at the age of 73. According to Bleacher Report, he was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer in December.
His daughter, Sarona (who wrestles in the WWE under the name Tamina), revealed his passing via Instagram:
Snuka’s death comes on the heels of a Lehigh County, PA judge dropping homicide charges against him, citing that he was “unfit to stand trial” based on his diagnosis. Snuka’s lawyer had also stated that he suffered dementia and was living in a hospice in Florida, with 6 months to live.
It was further argued that his dementia was partly caused from head trauma sustained in the wrestling ring. Last summer, Snuka joined a lawsuit against the WWE claiming that they failed to provide acceptable medical coverage and neglected to properly inform wrestlers of the long-term effects of neurological injuries.
In 1983 he was charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of his former mistress, Nancy Argentino. Prosecutors argued that she was beaten, while Snuka maintained that a bad fall is what caused her death. Her body was found in their Whitehall Township hotel room in Pennsylvania with a skull fracture, brain damage, and 39 cuts and bruises to other areas of her body.
Former WWE star and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and announcer Jim Ross offered their condolences on Twitter:
