On Friday, January 6th, 26-year-old Esteban Santiago opened fire at the baggage claim in the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, killing 5 people and injuring 6 others.
According to the Daily Mail, Santiago flew into Fort Lauderdale from Anchorage, Alaska, the handgun properly checked according to TSA regulations. He claimed his bag, went to the bathroom to load his gun, then carried out the attack.
He surrendered to police after shooting all of his bullets by dropping to the floor, laying spread-eagle and awaiting arrest.
Santiago is an Iraq war veteran who, just two months ago, was admitted to a mental health facility after strolling into an FBI field office and telling officials that his mind was being controlled by the government, claiming he was being forced to watch Islamic State videos.
His gun was held by police for a month, and then returned to him.
TMZ has just released security footage showing the moment in which Santiago walked in to the baggage claim area, pulled the 9mm handgun out from his waistband, and began randomly shooting at people.
TMZ hasn’t said how they obtained the footage, but it’s likely part of the FBI investigation.
Santiago faces federal charges and, if convicted, could face the death penalty.
