It apparently began with Ace of Cakes-featured executive chef Duff Goldman Tweeted out this photo:
The cake on the left is the one I made for President Obama’s inauguration 4 years ago. The one on the right is Trumps. I didn’t make it. 🤔 pic.twitter.com/qJXpCfPhii

Controversy ensued over the new president slicing into the nine-tier cake with a sword at the “Salute Our Armed Forces” ball. Allegations that it was plagiarized erupted all over the internet until the bakery that was commissioned to create the cake posted on Instagram:
Excited to share the cake we got to make for one of last night’s inaugural balls. While we most love creating original designs, when we are asked to replicate someone else’s work we are thrilled when it is a masterpiece like this one. @duff_goldman originally created this for Obama’s inauguration 4 years ago and this years committee commissioned us to re-create it. Best part is all the profits are being donated to @humanrightscampaign, one of our favorite charities who we have loved working with over the years. Because basic human rights are something every man, woman and child~ straight, gay or the rainbow in between~ deserve! (Check out Tuesday’s Instagram post to see how much we were able to donate!)
The Buttercream Bakeshop admitted that they were asked to re-create Goldman’s cake from Obama’s inauguration, and gave credit to him in the process.
The one difference between the cakes? Obama’s 50-pounder featured several layers of flavours, ranging from red velvet to pumpkin to chocolate chip. Trump’s, on the other hand, was mainly inedible Styrofoam, aside from the three-inch bottom portion saved for ceremonial cutting.
Funnily enough, the Bakeshop will not be profiting from the cake but will instead donate all proceeds to the Human Rights Campaign, a pro-LGBT charity. Not only will they avoid taking heat for making his cake, but they’re doing so in a way that benefits a marginalized group possibly under threat from Trump’s presidency. Nice move on their part!
